wedding photographer

The Imperial sits on the clifftop at Clifton, five hundred metres from the Sea Cliff Bridge on the Grand Pacific Drive, with the Pacific on one side and the Illawarra escarpment on the other. It is the most dramatic small venue near Wollongong.

Weddings at The Imperial at Clifton

The event space is Draper and Co, with dark timber floors, original brick walls and ocean views across three levels. The building sat empty for close to twenty years before reopening as The Imperial in 2021. There is no accommodation on site, so guests stay in Clifton, Scarborough or Thirroul.

Dark timber and original brick against a wall of ocean light is a big contrast to handle, and it is where knowing the room in advance pays off. The clifftop position means wind is part of the day, and a veil in wind is either the best frame of the wedding or the worst, depending on timing. The Sea Cliff Bridge is right there, and a short portrait trip along the Grand Pacific Drive is very much worth the twenty minutes.

Worth knowing before you plan

Clifton is twenty minutes up the coast from Wollongong, so this is home ground for me. No accommodation on site means guests are staying nearby and transport wants organising. There is no dedicated ceremony space at the venue itself, so couples typically marry nearby, at the Clifton School of Arts or on the coast, then move to The Imperial. That transition needs to be planned into the coverage.

The Imperial at Clifton FAQ

Questions about
The Imperial at Clifton

Do you photograph weddings at The Imperial at Clifton?

Yes. Clifton is twenty minutes up the coast from Wollongong, so The Imperial is genuinely local for me. Ocean on one side, escarpment on the other, and the Sea Cliff Bridge five hundred metres away. Send through your date and I will let you know if I am free.

Where do we hold the ceremony if we book The Imperial at Clifton?

Most couples marry nearby and then move to The Imperial, since the venue itself has no dedicated ceremony space. The Clifton School of Arts and the coast close by are both common choices. Whichever you pick, the travel between the two needs to be built into your coverage hours.
