The Co-Op on Belinda Street in Gerringong started life in 1888 as Australia’s oldest continually operating dairy co-operative. It is now a wedding venue with a coastal lawn and a room full of character, and I would love to shoot a wedding here.

The main space is the Truck Room, which has kept its original exposed steel beams and gabled roof and gained an antique mirror wall, red velvet lounges and an indoor fireplace. Outside there is a coastal lawn and garden. It is in the middle of Gerringong, right next to the train station, with parking on site.

Industrial heritage plus velvet and mirrors is an unusual combination and it photographs really well. The steel beams and gabled roof give you height and structure, the mirror wall gives you reflected frames you cannot get anywhere else, and the fireplace is the warm anchor once the sun is gone. Then you step outside onto a coastal lawn, so the gallery moves between hard and soft rather than sitting in one mood.
Worth knowing before you plan
Being in town next to the station makes this one of the easiest venues on the coast for guests, and it means Gerringong itself and the beaches nearby are minutes away if you want a short portrait trip. Both indoor and outdoor space also means the weather stops being a decision you have to make in advance.
