Weddings across the Southern Highlands
The Highlands do something no other part of New South Wales does. Cold-climate gardens, heritage homesteads, vineyard estates, barns with two-hundred-year-old bones. It photographs like the English countryside except the light is Australian, which is harder and brighter and needs handling rather than hoping.
Season matters here more than anywhere else I shoot. A Highlands wedding in February is a completely different photographic day to one in June: earlier sunsets, real cold, wet ground, and gardens that look nothing like the ones in the venue brochure. That is not a problem, it is just something to plan for, and it is one of the first things I want to talk about when you enquire.
The venues I most want to shoot up here are Bendooley Estate at Berrima, Mali Brae Farm near Moss Vale, Montrose House at Sutton Forest and the Fitzroy Inn at Mittagong. Every one of them has more than one ceremony option, which means the choice you make about where to stand at four in the afternoon shapes your whole gallery.

Do you travel to the Southern Highlands for weddings?
Yes, regularly, and there is no extra travel charge. I am based in Wollongong, which is a straightforward run up to Mittagong, Bowral, Berrima, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest. For Highlands weddings I plan to arrive well before I am needed rather than cutting the drive fine.
What is the best time of year for a Southern Highlands wedding?
Photographically, autumn is hard to beat, because the cold-climate gardens turn and the light stays soft for longer. Winter is genuinely cold with early sunsets, which shortens the portrait window. Summer is beautiful but bright, so ceremony timing matters much more. All of them work with planning.
